Step-by-Step Guidance for Families
Our Services
When Someone Dies at Home
1. Inform the GP or District Nurse
Call the GP or emergency services
If the death was expected, the doctor or nurse may visit and issue the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death.
Please note: We cannot bring your loved one into our care until a medical professional has confirmed the death.
2. Contact Your Funeral Director
Once the death has been confirmed by the doctor or nurse, you can call us to bring your loved one into our care.
We’re available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to support you.
3. Medical Certification Process
The Medical Certificate of Cause of Death will be sent to the Medical Examiner by the GP or nurse.
Once reviewed, the Medical Examiner will contact you and send the necessary documents to the Registrar.
The Registrar will then reach out to arrange a date and time to officially register the death.
If the Death Was Unexpected
Contact your GP immediately.
The GP may advise you to call the police, especially if the death was sudden or unexplained.
The police and doctor will notify the Coroner’s Office.
Coroner’s Involvement:
A coroner’s team will arrange transfer of your loved one to the local hospital mortuary.
The coroner will investigate and issue certification once the cause of death is confirmed.
We will stay in close contact and guide you through each step of this process.
When Someone Dies in a Hospital or Care Home
The attending doctor will complete the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death.
The Medical Examiner will be informed and will then contact the family.
All documents will be emailed directly to the Registrar, who will then contact the next of kin to arrange a registration appointment.
